Internet service in Jamaica can be a challenge due to frequent service disruptions and rising costs.

Challenges of Flow and Digicel

Historically, if you wanted internet service in Jamaica you were limited to the two main carriers, Flow and Digicel. In some areas there may be an option to use one or the other company creating a monopoly, which inevitably does two things. It causes rates to increase and service to decline. This is exactly what I’ve seen at our home in Drax Hall. We have had Flow since 2016 and the service goes out frequently and is slow! Aside from that, I received notification a few months go that our monthly rate was increasing.

In talking to neighbors, I’ve come to understand that Digicel can be more reliable at times, but there are regular service outages. During these service outages the service providers refuse to refund any money leaving you or your house guests without service.

Luckily, there is now a more reliable internet option in Jamaica!

Starlink is now available in Jamaica

If you are not familiar with Starlink, it is a “High-speed, low-latency broadband internet” that fosters to clients in “remote and rural locations across the globe”. I know numerous individuals that are using this service and experiencea faster, more reliable service than Flow or Digicel.

Starlink supports streaming, video calls and online gaming. All the required hardware is shipped to your door and can be self-installed. (If you are uncomfortable installing you could always call a handy man!) The package you receive will including your Starlink, WiFi router, cables and base.

Benefits of Starlink

One of the best things about Starlink is there is no contact. You are able to cancel your service at any time! They are so confident in their product that they also offer a 30 day trial with full refund once the hardware is sent back. This gives customers the opportunity to use the technology without fear of being locked in a contract with a service provider that provides sub-par connectivity.

Starlink can be managed remotely via a mobile app. If you plan to purchase and install Starlink, be sure to download the app to ensure the installation location and position is optimal. Since this is a satellite service, you will need to ensure a clear view of the sky to properly connect with orbiting satellites.

Pricing

Rates may vary across Jamaica, however when I entered my address in Drax Hall I was advised there would be a one-time hardware fee of $60,500 JMD and a monthly service fee of $8,450 JMD.

How do I get started?

If you are interested in installing Starlink you can visit their website. Enter your home address on the homepage and click ORDER NOW to get started! They also have a lot more information on their website explaining how the technology works and compares to other satellite services.
